Collection: Ficus

The Ficus is a versatile houseplant, celebrated for its elegant foliage and the wide range of varieties it offers. Many types feature large, glossy leaves in deep green or striking variegations of white, yellow or even red. One of the most popular is the Ficus elastica, often known as the rubber plant, admired for its broad, leathery leaves. While ficus plants may occasionally produce small, inconspicuous flowers, they are chiefly valued for their attractive foliage and their ability to brighten and refresh indoor spaces.

Care and the ideal location

Ficus is suitable for both dedicated plant enthusiasts and those looking for a relatively low-maintenance option. It thrives in bright rooms with plenty of indirect light, as direct sun can scorch the leaves. Well-draining compost is essential, and the soil should be kept evenly moist without becoming waterlogged. Overwatering should be avoided, and containers must have adequate drainage holes. Wiping the leaves now and again helps maintain their natural shine and supports healthy growth. During the active growing season in spring and summer, feeding with a balanced fertiliser can encourage stronger growth and vibrant foliage.

Botanical name and origin

The botanical name varies depending on the species, with popular examples including *Ficus lyrata* (fiddle-leaf fig), *Ficus benjamina* (weeping fig) and *Ficus elastica* (rubber plant). Originating from the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia and Australia, many ficus species grow as large trees in dense forests and rainforests. Bringing a ficus into the home introduces a touch of this tropical splendour, with a plant that is not only visually appealing but also known for its air-purifying qualities, filtering pollutants and contributing to a healthier indoor environment.
