How and when to plant rhododendron – tips for healthy shrubs

The rhododendron is a highly valued garden plant, admired for its spectacular and colourful flowers that appear in spring. It can be grown as a decorative shrub or integrated into a garden border with other shrubs. To grow healthy and bloom abundantly, it is important to plant it correctly and at the right time.

When is the best time to plant rhododendron?

The ideal time to plant rhododendron is early spring, in March–April, or in autumn, during September–October. In these periods the soil is moist and temperatures are mild, which helps the roots establish before periods of extreme cold or heat.

Where to plant rhododendron

Rhododendrons prefer semi-shaded areas, protected from strong midday sun. It is best to plant them near taller trees or shrubs that provide light shade. The soil should be acidic, well-drained and rich in organic matter. Avoid areas with standing water, as rhododendrons are sensitive to waterlogging.

How to plant rhododendron step by step

  1. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, but not too deep.
  2. Place the plant so that the root collar is at soil level.
  3. Fill the hole with garden soil mixed with peat or acidic compost.
  4. Firm the soil gently and water thoroughly after planting.

Aftercare

  • Keep the soil moist, but not excessively wet.
  • Apply a mulch layer (leaves, bark) around the base to retain moisture and protect the roots.
  • Whenever possible, water with rainwater, as rhododendrons do not tolerate lime from tap water.

Summary

Rhododendrons are best planted in spring or autumn, in a semi-shaded spot with acidic, well-drained soil. With correct planting and a little care, this shrub will reward you year after year with rich, colourful blooms in your garden.
