How and when to plant boxwood – evergreen hedges and topiary

Boxwood, also known as Buxus sempervirens or common box, is an evergreen shrub widely used for hedges and decorative topiary. Its small, dense leaves make it ideal for both classical and modern gardens. For healthy growth, it is important to plant boxwood correctly and at the right time.

When is the best time to plant boxwood?

Boxwood in containers can be planted throughout the year, but the ideal times are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–October). Avoid planting during periods of severe frost or extreme heat, as the plant needs time to establish.

Where to plant boxwood

Boxwood prefers semi-shaded locations, but it also tolerates full sun as long as the soil remains moist. The soil should be well-drained, humus-rich and slightly calcareous. Avoid waterlogged areas, as they may cause root rot.

How to plant boxwood step by step

  1. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball.
  2. Place the plant at the same depth as it was growing in the container.
  3. Backfill with garden soil mixed with compost or peat.
  4. Firm the soil gently and water thoroughly after planting.

Aftercare

  • Water regularly, especially in the first months and during dry periods.
  • Apply mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and protect the roots.
  • Prune boxwood twice a year, usually in May–June and again in August, to maintain the desired shape.

Summary

Boxwood is best planted in spring or autumn, in semi-shade and in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. With regular watering and periodic pruning, this evergreen shrub will provide structure and elegance to your garden all year round.
